void pecsim::bulge(double amlt, double akp, double &a8, double &a9, double &centroid)

Calculates the magnetic local time (MLT) location of the plasmapause bulge centroid, as well as the parameters a8 and a9 used in modeling the plasmapause transition.

The bulge centroid calculation was corrected based on an interpretation error in Moldwin et al.’s equation for the bulge centroid location in MLT.

Parameters:

  • amlt – Magnetic local time in hours

  • akp – Planetary Kp index

  • a8 – Output parameter representing the plasmapause location factor

  • a9 – Output parameter representing the plasmapause steepness factor

  • centroid – Output parameter representing the bulge centroid location
